¿Que puedo decir de la pieza elegida este mes? me gusta. Me gusta mucho. Ya el título es puro Doctor Who. Y nos muestra una reunión que muchos aun querríamos ver. El 9º y 10ª juntos.

Y a una escena que es puro amor fan se une una ejecución magistral. Los retratos, los colores... En la galería donde está alojada esta imagen podéis ver más ejemplos de fanart whoviano en este estilo.

A mi no me importaría verlo lanzado al mercado como poster oficial.

Biblioteca Whoviana: The Clockwise Man

Esta novela posee el honorable honor (valga la redundancia) de ser la que inauguró la serie de obras originales en prosa basadas en la actual etapa de la serie. ¿Los protagonistas? El 9º Doctor y Rose. ¿La época? Londres, Octubre de 1924. La gente aun recuerda la Era Victoriana, y reina la conmoción política en la vieja Europa a causa de la Revolución Rusa de 1917.

La materialización de la TARDIS nunca jamás ha sido casual, y esta vez tampoco. La trama implica una serie de asesinatos, y a los múltiples y peculiares personajes refugiados en las estancias del Imperial Club: Sir George Harding, Lady Anna, Melissa Heart, Lord Wyse… una amplia selección de lo más común en la alta sociedad británica de principios del siglo 20. Sin ser miembro del Club, también el lector se topará con la misteriosa Dama Pintada, que oculta su rostro tras decoradas máscaras.

Justin Richards hace una muy buena labor dando el primer paso en las novelas de la etapa actual de la serie. A menudo, el lector creerá estar leyendo un típico whodunit británico. Y creedme. Hay una parte de la trama que no os voy a desvelar porque me dejó literalmente sin palabras cuando la leí. No me la esperaba, y eso es bueno.

Y, aunque lo parezca, esta no es una aventura puramente histórica. Aunque no voy a decir en que sentido, lo siento. Eso corresponde disfrutarlo al lector.

¿Ambiente? Se ve, se escucha a los personajes, cada uno con su voz. Se siente el calor de las chimeneas del Imperial Club. Se desea visitarlo hoy en día y buscar aquel sitio que, si leéis el libro, supuso uno de los escasos momentos de calma del Doctor en su vida. Los personajes… si tuviera que elegir, me quedaría con tres: la Dama Pintada (Painted Lady en el original), Repple y uno que no mencionaré por su importancia crucial en el desarrollo de la trama.

Por su fuerza, por su carisma y en el caso de uno de ellos por la melancolía que inspira y porque fue el único en realidad que me hizo preguntarme (y aun me pregunto) que fue de él tras los hechos narrados.

Para aquellos cuya lengua nativa no es el inglés, pueden estar tranquilos. Mr. Richards se expresa de manera clara, comprensible, y la lectura fluye sin tropezones ni baches que nos obliguen a interrumpir la lectura. De hecho, quien estas líneas escribe tuvo dificultades a la hora de abandonar el libro para realizar otras tareas más urgentes.

The Clockwise Man merece la pena. Es entretenida, podría ser sin problemas parte de la serie, y además… ¡tiene al 9º Doctor! ¿Qué más se puede pedir?

Canciones que me recuerdan... (1)

¡Hola de nuevo a todos! Tras una (GRAN) temporada sin escribir nada, vuelvo a la carga con algo bastante original.

¿No os ha pasado nunca que estáis oyendo una canción y os viene un tema particular a la cabeza? Me temo que a mí me pasa con TODAS las que escucho... eso me pasa por ser fan de tantas cosas. En fin, a lo que iba... El Doctor no se queda atrás a ese respecto. De tantísimas canciones que conozco, a veces oigo alguna que me recuerda terriblemente a algún tema relacionado con el Doctor o algo que lo rodea. En este caso os traigo un par cuya letra parezca escrita para él y otras que parezca que hablen de su (melodramática) historia con Rose. Suena un poco a chorrada, pero es divertídisimo.

Por supuesto, hay muchas más... Las sugerencias son muy bienvenidas.

Pues sin más, os invito a echar un vistazo a estas letras, me temo que para los más versados en inglés (nunca os fieis de una traducción automática)... y a ver si os pasa como a mí. Por supuesto ya de paso, buscarlas en Youtube o similares no estaría mal. Siempre es mucho mejor oírlas :)

Whoniverso - Figuras Históricas: Shakespeare.

"I say to thee Expelliarmus !" - William Shakespeare, The Shakespeare Code.

Como serie en la que el viaje temporal es uno de los factores centrales, Doctor Who ha visto desfilar por sus historias (ya sea en la serie propiamente dicha o en el universo expandido de las novelas o audiodramas) a un buen número de figuras históricas de nuestra bola de barro azul.

Mi pretensión inicial consistía en uno o dos artículos de repaso general a todas esas personalidades, pero he optado finalmente por dedicar posts individuales a los más importantes, y con uno que ha tenido varios encuentros con El Doctor vamos a comenzar: William Shakespeare.

Nacido en 1564 Shakespeare es la figura central de la literatura inglesa y uno de los individuos más importantes y reconocidos en la historia del Reino Unido. Obviamente, El Doctor tendría que encontrárselo a la fuerza.

Teniendo en cuenta la naturaleza no lineal del viaje temporal, vamos a repasar los encuentros del dramaturgo inglés con El Doctor desde la perspectiva cronológica de William. Así, tenemos que recurrir a los audiodramas de Big Finish y remontarnos a 1572, donde el 8º Doctor se vería envuelto en una aventura en la que un joven Will Shakespeare acabaría desplazado temporalmente en el tiempo (soy consciente de la redundancia) hasta los primeros años del siglo XXI (The Time of the Daleks).

Un segundo encuentro lo encontramos en el comic A Groatsworth of Wit publicado en Doctor Who Magazine en una historia en la que la principal interacción de Shakespeare sería con el 9º Doctor y Rose Tyler.

El siguiente encuentro nos lleva ya al año 1597, donde el 5º Doctor comparte unas copas con Shakespeare en el audiodrama de Big Finish The Kingmaker.

Entramos ya de lleno en la etapa actual de la serie televisiva con la siguiente reunión en 1599 en el episodio The Shakespeare Code. Con esto podemos también comenzar a plantearnos el típico dolor de cabeza derivado de la continuidad. A estas alturas Shakespeare habría conocido ya a varias encarnaciones previas de nuestro gallyfreyano favorito pero no da muestras de reconocer el nombre ‘El Doctor’. Por su parte el 10º Doctor tampoco parece dar muestras de contactos previos con Shakespeare y si bien los que ya hemos mencionado se sitúan en el terreno nebuloso de la continuidad del universo expandido debemos recordar como el 4º Doctor mencionó claramente el haber conocido a Shakespeare y haberle ayudado a transcribir Hamlet en el serial City of Death de la etapa clásica de la serie. La opción más fácil es no darle muchas vueltas y disfrutar de las historias, pero puestos a buscar explicaciones seguramente cada fan haya elaborado sus teorías.

Un último encuentro (del que tengamos constancia) acontecería en 1609 en la historia The Empire of Glass (Virgin Missing Adventures) donde Shakespeare, como agente de la corona, tendría un encuentro con el Primer Doctor, Irving Braxiatel, Galileo Galilei y Christopher Marlowe. El Doctor usaría una droga para borrar sus recuerdos del encuentro, hasta que punto esto afectaría a los recuerdos de Shakespeare de otros encuentros previos con El Doctor se desconoce.

En términos generales, Shakespeare siempre ha sido retratado de forma generosa en sus apariciones en el Whoniverso, siendo la más reciente para nosotros en The Shakespeare Code una de las más significativas, mostrando a un William Shakespeare carismático que parece ser uno de los seres humanos de mente más poderosa ya que sin ningún tipo de entrenamiento mental es totalmente inmune a la ilusión del papel psíquico del Doctor. Esto y su capacidad para adaptarse a los hechos y sucesos extraordinarios que parecen acompañar al Señor del Tiempo es una de las muchas causas por las que El Doctor lo reconoce como genio a niveles más allá de los literarios.
